Curated programme with Daniel Pioro & BBC Philharmonic

I’m in the studio with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and violinist Daniel Pioro in a couple of weeks to record a programme we’ve devised, for a live Radio 3 broadcast on 19 May. We’ve arranged various pieces of pre-orchestral music for a slightly reduced BBC Phil, and I’ve thrown in an orchestration of the Gymnopédies I wrote during lockdown:

  • Hildegard von Bingen (arr. Coult/Pioro) – O Ecclesia
  • Giuseppe Tartini (arr. Coult) – Sonata No. 2
  • Tom Coult – Gymnopédies
  • Heinrich Biber (arr. Coult/Pioro) – The Agony in the Garden
  • Antonio Vivaldi (arr. Coult) – La Follia
  • Jean-Philippe Rameau (arr. Coult/Pioro) – Tristes apprêts

Daniel is soloist for all pieces except for my Gymnopédies and my Vivaldi arrangement, and the programme is conducted by Ryan McAdams. Daniel and the BBC Phil were due to premiere my violin concerto Pleasure Garden last year at the Bridgewater Hall and the Aldeburgh Festival – that piece will be recieve its premiere in time, but I’m so grateful the BBC have let us loose with our box of crayons in the meantime.

The broadcast on BBC Radio 3 is on Wednesday 19 May at 2pm GMT and will be available for 30 days – tune in here.
